LONG BEACH, Calif. — Orange EV and OptiGrid used the opening day of the IANA Intermodal EXPO (September 15–17) to unveil the Orange Juicer, a battery‑integrated DC fast charger designed to help fleets sidestep protracted utility upgrades and six‑ to seven‑figure infrastructure costs.
The unit pairs a 180‑kWh onboard battery with steady draws from existing site power, then discharges on demand to deliver high‑capacity fast charging. The companies say the approach can maintain full charging performance while requiring up to 85% less grid input power, allowing installations to shrink from years to weeks and cutting upfront construction outlays.
Positioned as a drop‑in, modular platform, the Orange Juicer is built to scale with fleet needs and can be relocated as operations evolve. Although Orange EV is the launch customer, the system is designed to be compatible across brands. OptiGrid said the technology reflects a fourth‑generation platform that originated with FreeWire and has been refined for fleet duty cycles. Orange EV added that pairing the charger with its yard trucks — which the company says have delivered average diesel savings of about $60,000 per vehicle annually — is aimed at accelerating total cost of ownership gains.
Commercial availability is slated for the fourth quarter of 2025. A prototype is on display at the Intermodal EXPO in Long Beach, where Orange EV is exhibiting (booth #1122) through September 17.
The launch comes as roughly 2,000 intermodal stakeholders gather in Long Beach to evaluate equipment, technology and sustainability solutions affecting containerized freight across road, rail and ocean.
